PROJECT OPERA

Project Opera is a highly interactive program for students that brings the magic of opera into the classroom. Inspiration can come from anywhere – retell the story of a class novel, delve into the experiences of Canadian history or explain the water cycle through song – anything and everything can be explored through opera! The delivery of this popular program has been adapted to a virtual platform while maintaining the ability for students to work directly with professional artists. Participating teachers will work together with a VO teaching artist in the design and delivery of the program. The program now has three options for teachers to choose from. Option One – Story, Words, Music Based on our traditional artist-in-residence program, Story, Words, Music guides students through the process of retelling or responding to a story by writing two original songs and then staging their version as a performance. Visual art and movement workshops can also be included in this option. Option Two – Experimental Opera Experimental Opera uses a more collaborative approach to dive into a story through music, text, movement, and visual art. Students will explore stories through multiple art forms in unique and surprising ways as they develop new tools for expressing their ideas through the arts. Option Three – Bespoke Learning Teachers and teaching artists will come together to custom design a series of learning opportunities for students in the arts. Possibilities include singing, spoken word, composition, movement, and visual art. Program Details Project Opera is designed to run in two classrooms at the same school. Each class receives two one-hour workshops per week, usually on the same day. The topics covered in Project Opera are specific to each class and teacher. We have found more success when the two classes are relatively close in grade level. The program runs for 5 to 6 weeks with the exact schedule determined by teachers and teaching artists in advance. Program fee: $500.
