A Statement from Vancouver Opera regarding the Wordfly Data Incident

August 2, 2022

Update: Wordfly Data Incident Did Not Impact Vancouver Opera Data

As previously communicated, our third-party email service provider, Wordfly was a victim of a ransomware attack in July, resulting in the encryption of the Wordfly application.

Wordfly immediately retained outside digital forensic experts to understand what happened and to assist with restoring access to Wordfly.

Wordfly has now confirmed that Vancouver Opera’s data has not been impacted at any point as a result of this incident. After extensive investigation, Wordfly has determined that only a small subset of their customer base had data exported by the bad actor that perpetrated this incident.

We are hoping that this alleviates any concerns you may have had about this incident. Wordfly assures us that they have implemented further security measures to protect Vancouver Opera’s data moving forward and to help prevent future incidents.

In the spirit of transparency and because your privacy is important to us, we would like to let you know about an incident that may have resulted in limited access to certain personal information stored by our third-party email provider, Wordfly.

What happened?
Vancouver Opera uses a third-party service provider named WordFly to help us prepare and deliver various email communications. We understand that WordFly’s network was disrupted by a ransomware attack on their systems between July 10 – 14, 2022. WordFly has indicated that the attacker exported certain personal information from WordFly’s systems, including information belonging to Vancouver Opera patrons. Wordfly has advised us that they understand the data has been deleted from the unidentified individual’s possession, and there is no evidence that your information has been publicly distributed.

What information was involved?
WordFly has advised Vancouver Opera that some of your personal information was involved in this incident, specifically your name, email address, phone number and whether you are a donor or subscriber. Vancouver Opera did not share any of our patron’s credit card, debit card or other financial information with Wordfly and therefore this information was not involved in this incident.

What can you do?
We encourage you to be cautious of unsolicited emails asking for personal information, and not to click links or open attachments from suspicious emails. Neither WordFly nor Vancouver Opera will ever ask you for your financial information via email.
