VIRTUAL SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Vancouver Opera’s school and education programs have gone digital this season!
We are pleased to offer our education programs as virtual experiences for both classroom and home learning environments. We are committed to offering students a rich array of virtual programming that will nurture hearts, open minds and broaden creativity through opera.
Elementary – Grade 2 to 7
Project Opera is a highly interactive program for students that brings the magic of opera into the classroom. Inspiration can come from anywhere – retell the story of a class novel, delve into the experiences of Canadian history or explain the water cycle through song – anything and everything can be explored through opera!
The delivery of this popular program has been adapted to a virtual platform while maintaining the ability for students to work directly with professional artists. Participating teachers will work together with a VO teaching artist in the design and delivery of the program. The program now has three options for teachers to choose from.
Option One – Story, Words, Music
Based on our traditional artist-in-residence program, Story, Words, Music guides students through the process of retelling or responding to a story by writing two original songs and then staging their version as a performance. Visual art and movement workshops can also be included in this option.
Option Two – Experimental Opera
Experimental Opera uses a more collaborative approach to dive into a story through music, text, movement, and visual art. Students will explore stories through multiple art forms in unique and surprising ways as they develop new tools for expressing their ideas through the arts.
Option Three – Bespoke Learning
Teachers and teaching artists will come together to custom design a series of learning opportunities for students in the arts. Possibilities include singing, spoken word, composition, movement, and visual art.
Project Opera is designed to run in two classrooms at the same school. Each class receives two one-hour workshops per week, usually on the same day. The topics covered in Project Opera are specific to each class and teacher. We have found more success when the two classes are relatively close in grade level. The program runs for 5 to 6 weeks with the exact schedule determined by teachers and teaching artists in advance.
Program fee: $500 plus GST
Secondary – Grades 8 to 12
Vancouver Opera’s 2020-2021 Digital Season includes four professionally recorded chamber operas available for viewing online. Each opera is between 40 to 80 minutes in length and are easily accessible to young audiences new to opera.
With the purchase of a $99 season subscription, educators will receive access to all 4 operas plus
- A study guide for each opera that address the core competencies and big ideas in the provincial curriculum for arts and humanities courses
- Suggested activities for both in-class and virtual learning
- A virtual presentation for students about each opera
- One virtual workshop with a VO teaching artist (music, composition, movement, visual art, text) per opera.
The VO Capstone Mentorship Program – Grade 12 Only
The Capstone Mentorship Program is designed to support Grade 12 students interested in the arts in completing their cumulative project for Career Education 12. Students selected for the program will be matched with staff and/or artists from Vancouver Opera. Mentorships are available in every area of the company including artist development, arts administration, and production. Registration will be ongoing until the program is at capacity.
