Vancouver Opera Expands Education Program to Adults with Opera 101

 MARCH 17, 2022, VANCOUVER, B.C.Vancouver Opera’s music education outreach programs will be expanded this year with a new course aimed specifically at adults. Opera 101 is a five-part introductory course into the world of opera. The program will be taught by Vancouver Opera Teaching Artist and soprano Eve Daniell and special guests including Vancouver Opera Associate Conductor Leslie Dala.  

This five-part online course will introduce participants to opera through its eras and notable figures using an interactive multimedia presentation. This course will breathe new life into the art form with anecdotes, historical context and listening exercises that can be enjoyed by all.  

“The Vancouver Opera education program has been providing children and youth with school and student programs for many years and we are thrilled to expand our education program to adults,” said Tom Wright, Vancouver Opera General Director. “Our online Opera 101 course is designed to welcome all into the world of opera including those who are opera curious and opera lovers. The primary goal is to make opera accessible and to invite the community to dig deeper into this extraordinary art form.”

By the end of this course, participants will have a confident understanding of the basics of opera music, singers, and production. They will have an understanding of the industry along with its strengths and ongoing shifts in culture. Participants will learn about the history of the medium but also its evolution and the ongoing push for equality in the opera world.  

This comprehensive course includes:
1. Five 90-minute virtual sessions offered via Zoom.
2. Extra listening options and resources for each subject covered.
3. A variety of guest speakers from Vancouver Opera to explain different facets of the opera world.
4. Focus on some of the hidden figures of opera, including women and people of colour.  

Opera 101 begins on Tuesday, May 3 with five Zoom sessions until May 31. The cost of the program is $100 and registration is now open.
