Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program

Where talent meets mentorship, and emerging voices take center stage. Founded in 2012 through a generous gift from the family of Yulanda M. Faris, the Young Artists Program at Vancouver Opera is a residency-based artist development program designed to support emerging Canadian opera professionals at a pivotal stage in their careers. Structured as an immersive residency, the program provides artists with sustained time, space, and institutional support to develop their craft within a professional operatic environment. It serves as a vital bridge between formal academic training and the realities of a professional career, allowing artists to deepen their artistic practice while gaining first-hand experience working inside a major opera company. Led by Program Director Leslie Dala and Coach Tina Chang, the program offers comprehensive, individualized mentorship to a select cohort of singers, along with a pianist and a stage director each season. Through close collaboration, coaching, and performance-based learning, resident artists are supported as they refine their voices, artistry, and professional readiness.

As a residency within a working opera company, the Young Artists Program embeds artists directly into Vancouver Opera’s mainstage ecosystem. Resident artists gain hands-on production experience while observing and participating in professional rehearsal and performance processes. Key production components include:

  • Performance and understudy opportunities in Vancouver Opera’s mainstage productions

  • Participation in rehearsals alongside principal artists, conductors, and production teams

  • Resident pianists serving as rehearsal pianists for mainstage productions, as appropriate

  • The resident stage director contributing to dramatic rehearsals and collaborating closely with mainstage stage directors and production staff

  • Exposure to professional production workflows, schedules, and artistic decision-making

This production immersion allows artists to develop fluency in the professional environment while building confidence, adaptability, and collaborative skills essential to a sustainable operatic career.

Alongside production work, resident artists participate in a comprehensive training curriculum designed to support vocal, dramatic, and professional growth. Training components include:

  • Ongoing individualized vocal and musical coaching with Vancouver Opera’s resident music staff

  • Instruction in diction and language, acting and dramatic interpretation, and movement and stage combat

  • Career development sessions focused on audition preparation, agency representation, and industry navigation

  • Engagements with guest instructors and visiting artists, providing additional perspectives in vocal technique, interpretation, and professional practice

  • Masterclasses with internationally acclaimed artists and coaches

Each season culminates in a fully realized production conceived and led by the Young Artists. Working from initial concept through rehearsal and performance, the cohort takes primary responsibility for artistic planning and execution, including performance, artistic concept and dramaturgy, and music direction. Throughout the process, Vancouver Opera’s music, technical, stage management, and production staff function as professional resources, providing production support, operational guidance, and mentorship while enabling the artists to lead the project from start to finish.
