Statement on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Reconciliation

Since 1958, Vancouver Opera has been an integral part of our city’s cultural tapestry. We are rooted in the principle of open arms and open minds, and we acknowledge and profoundly value our relationship with the three Host Nations on whose ancestral and territories we operate on, the xʷməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. We express our deep gratitude for the opportunity to live, work, and create on these lands. Reconciliation and Respect Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples is of utmost importance to us. We strive to build relationships based on mutual respect, understanding, and shared goals. In our journey towards reconciliation, we actively seek and value the guidance of Indigenous leaders and communities to inform our practices, performances, and engagements. As we move forward, we are actively listening and learning from Indigenous voices, particularly those of the three Host Nations, ensuring their perspectives inform our actions and decisions. Our commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation permeates every aspect of our company:

  • Diversity:

We seek diversity not only in our staff, artists, and collaborators, but also in the ideas and perspectives they bring. This richness of thought sparks creativity and innovation in our productions and engagement.

  • Equity:

We recognize the uniqueness of individual experiences, abilities, backgrounds, and access to opportunities. We commit to creating opportunities that ensure everyone has equitable access and representation in our work.

  • Inclusion:

For us, inclusion is a continuous journey. We aim to foster an environment where all individuals can freely express their authentic selves, and where differences are embraced as strengths.

As we present operatic repertoire spanning the 17th-21st centuries, we prioritize producing contemporary and historic works that resonate with and reflect the disparate and unique lived experiences of today’s world. A Living Commitment We recognize that understanding and action around equity, diversity, reconciliation, and inclusion are ongoing and evolving processes. This statement is not static; it is a living reflection of our current commitments and aspirations. As we continue to engage in dialogue with our stakeholders and deepen our knowledge and understanding, we pledge to revisit and update this statement. We are dedicated to ensuring it remains relevant and true to our evolving goals and the needs of the communities we serve.
